Your Phone & Computer Together
For most people in India, the phone came first and the computer second. Your photos, documents, contacts and WhatsApp chats are on the phone, while the computer is better for typing, printing and big screens. Making the two work together saves a lot of time: no more emailing photos to yourself or retyping a message.
In this lesson you will move files with a USB cable and wirelessly, connect your phone with Windows Phone Link, use WhatsApp on the computer safely, and share your phone's internet with a laptop.
Move files with a USB cable
This is the simplest and fastest way to copy many photos at once.
Android phone:
- Connect the phone to the computer with its charging cable (it must be a data cable, not a charge-only one).
- Unlock the phone. Pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification (it may say Charging this device via USB).
- Choose File transfer (some phones say Transfer files or MTP).
- On the computer, open File Explorer (
Windows key + E) and click This PC. The phone appears with its name. - Open it, then Internal storage (or Internal shared storage) > DCIM > Camera for photos. WhatsApp images and downloads are in other folders on the same storage.
- Select the files and copy them (
Ctrl + C) into a folder on the computer (Ctrl + V).
iPhone: connect the cable, unlock the iPhone and tap Trust when asked. Then open the Photos app on Windows and click Import to copy photos and videos.
You can check whether Windows sees the phone from Terminal. Phones connected for file transfer appear as portable devices (the class name is WPD):
Get-PnpDevice -PresentOnly -Class WPD | Select-Object FriendlyNameFriendlyName ------------ Redmi Note 13 5G
If nothing appears, the phone is probably set to charging only. Change the USB option on the phone to File transfer.
Share files without a cable: Quick Share
Google's Quick Share app for Windows sends files between an Android phone and a Windows PC wirelessly. According to Google, the PC needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later, both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, and they should be close together, within about 5 metres. (Samsung PCs use Samsung's own Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store.)
- Download Quick Share from Google's official Android website, install it, sign in and choose a device name.
- Phone to PC: on the phone, open a photo or file, tap Share, then Quick Share, and choose your PC. Accept the request on the PC. Received files go to a Quick Share folder inside Downloads.
- PC to phone: drag a file into the Quick Share window, choose your phone and click Share; accept on the phone.
If it fails on an office network, your workplace Wi-Fi may block device-to-device sharing.
Phone Link
Phone Link is a Microsoft app built into Windows 11. With the Link to Windows app on your phone, it lets you see the phone's messages, notifications and recent photos on the PC, and make and receive calls through the computer.
| Android | iPhone | |
|---|---|---|
| Phone app needed | Link to Windows (pre-installed on some phones) | Link to Windows from the App Store |
| How they connect | Both on the same Wi-Fi network; pair by scanning a QR code | Bluetooth pairing |
| Main features | Messages, calls, notifications, photos, copy and paste between devices | Messages, calls and notifications; fewer features than Android |
To set it up:
- Open Phone Link from Start (or with the line below).
- Choose Android or iPhone and follow the steps. For Android, the PC shows a QR code that you scan with the phone.
- Allow the permissions it asks for on the phone, such as notifications and photos.
Start-Process "ms-settings:mobile-devices"This opens the Mobile devices page of Settings, where you can manage the phone link and open the app.
WhatsApp on the computer
Typing long messages and sending documents is much easier on a keyboard. You can install WhatsApp for Windows from the Microsoft Store, or open web.whatsapp.com in a browser.
- Open WhatsApp on the computer; it shows a QR code.
- On the phone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings (or the three-dot menu) > Linked devices > Link a device.
- Scan the QR code on the computer screen.
Your chats appear on the computer. To drop a PDF into a chat, drag it from File Explorer into the chat window.
Use your phone's internet on the laptop
When there is no broadband, the phone can share its mobile data:
- On the phone, open Settings and turn on Hotspot (or Mobile hotspot / Personal Hotspot). Set a strong password there.
- On the laptop, click the network icon on the taskbar and connect to the phone's name, as with any Wi-Fi network.
- Turn the hotspot off when you finish; it uses battery and data quickly.
Your photos in the cloud
If your Android phone backs up photos to Google Photos, you can see them on any computer at photos.google.com and download what you need, without a cable. Remember that this backup uses your Google storage, shared with Gmail and Drive (see Cloud Storage).
Common mistakes
- Using a charge-only cable. Cheap cables may charge the phone but cannot transfer files.
- Leaving the phone on "Charging only". Choose File transfer from the USB notification.
- Staying logged in to WhatsApp on someone else's computer. Log out from Linked devices.
- An open hotspot. Always set a password so neighbours cannot use your data.
Key points
- With a USB data cable and File transfer mode, an Android phone appears in This PC; iPhone photos import through the Photos app.
- Quick Share sends files between Android and Windows wirelessly when both are close and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on.
- Phone Link shows your phone's messages, calls and notifications on the PC.
- Link WhatsApp to a computer from Linked devices, and log out on shared computers.
- A phone hotspot shares mobile data with a laptop; protect it with a password.
