Project: Make, Save & Email Your Resume

Computer Fundamentals · Lesson 29 of 29 Project 9 min read Updated

This project brings the whole course together. You will create a real, one-page resume (a short document that describes your education, skills and experience), save it properly as a PDF, keep a copy in cloud storage, and send it by email the way employers expect.

You will use files and folders, a word processor, PDFs, cloud storage, email etiquette and online safety: skills from almost every lesson. Follow the steps in order and tick each one off. By the end you will have a resume you can actually send, and the confidence to do the same for any document.

Our example is Priya Sharma, a B.Com graduate from Jaipur applying for an accounts assistant job. Use your own details as you work.

Step 1: Make a project folder

Keep every version of your resume in one place.

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer and go to Documents.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + N, type Resume, and press Enter.

Or create it from Terminal. This line creates the folder inside your real Documents folder, even if OneDrive manages it:

PowerShell
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path "$([Environment]::GetFolderPath('MyDocuments'))\Resume"
Output
    Directory: C:\Users\Priya\OneDrive\Documents

Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
---- ------------- ------ ----
d----- 02-11-2026 10:15 AM Resume

Step 2: Collect your information

Before opening Word, write down the facts. A resume must be true; every detail may be checked.

Leave out your Aadhaar number, PAN, bank details, full home address, and usually date of birth and photo, unless the employer specifically asks. A resume is shared widely; keep it free of sensitive data.

Step 3: Create the document

You can use Word or Google Docs; see Word Processing.

  1. Open a blank document, or a simple resume template (Word: File > New, search "resume"; Docs: Template gallery). Choose a plain, professional template, not a colourful one.
  2. Set the paper size to A4 (Word: Layout > Size > A4; Docs: File > Page setup).
  3. Set margins to about 2 cm so everything fits on one page.
  4. Type your name at the top and apply Heading 1 (or the template's title style). Centre it.
  5. Under it, one line of contact details: city, phone and email separated by a vertical bar or commas.
  6. Add a Heading 2 for each section: Objective, Education, Skills, Experience, Projects, Languages.
  7. Use bullets for skills and experience points. Start each point with an action word: Prepared, Managed, Built, Handled.

Step 4: Format it neatly

  • Use one clear font, such as Calibri or Arial, at 10.5 to 12 points for body text.
  • Keep headings consistent by using styles, not by making text big by hand.
  • Use a two-column table without borders if you want dates aligned on the right; never use rows of spaces.
  • Keep it to one page. If it runs over, shorten sentences before shrinking the font.

Step 5: Check it carefully

  1. Run spell check (F7 in Word; Tools > Spelling and grammar in Docs).
  2. Read it aloud slowly. Check your phone number and email twice: one wrong digit and no employer can reach you.
  3. Ask a friend or family member to read it.
  4. Save the editable version. In Word, press Ctrl + S and save it in the Resume folder as Priya-Sharma-Resume.docx. Google Docs saves automatically; give it the same name.

Use a clear file name with your name in it. Recruiters receive hundreds of files called resume.pdf.

Step 6: Save as PDF

Employers prefer PDF because it looks the same on every device and cannot be changed by accident.

  • Word: File > Save As, choose the Resume folder, set Save as type to PDF, and click Save.
  • Google Docs: File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf), then move the file from Downloads into the Resume folder (Ctrl + X, then Ctrl + V).

Open the PDF and check it: one page, nothing cut off, fonts correct. Then confirm the file and its size from Terminal:

PowerShell
Get-ChildItem "$([Environment]::GetFolderPath('MyDocuments'))\Resume" | Select-Object Name, Length
Output
Name Length
---- ------
Priya-Sharma-Resume.docx 18342
Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf 96120

Length is the size in bytes: the PDF is about 94 KB, small enough for any email or job portal. If a portal sets a maximum size, compare it with this number.

Step 7: Store it in the cloud

A copy in the cloud means you can send or print your resume from any phone or cyber cafe, and you will not lose it if your laptop fails. See Cloud Storage.

Google Drive:

  1. Open drive.google.com, click New > New folder and name it Resume.
  2. Open the folder, click New > File upload, and choose Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf.

OneDrive: if your Documents folder is backed up by OneDrive, the file is already uploading; look for the green tick or cloud icon next to it. Otherwise, copy the Resume folder into your OneDrive folder.

Keep the sharing setting Restricted. You will send the resume as an attachment, so it does not need a public link.

Step 8: Write and send the email

Use the etiquette from Email with Gmail & Email Etiquette.

  1. Open Gmail and click Compose.
  2. Leave To empty for now.
  3. Subject: Application for Accounts Assistant - Priya Sharma
  4. Write a short, polite message:
Text
Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Accounts Assistant position advertised on your
company website. I completed my B.Com from the University of Rajasthan
in 2026 and have practical experience in billing, stock registers and
Excel reports from my family's stationery business.

Please find my resume attached. I would be glad to come for an interview
at your convenience.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,
Priya Sharma
Jaipur | 98xxxxxx45
  1. Click the paperclip and attach Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf (or use the Drive icon to insert it from Google Drive as an attachment).
  2. Check the attachment opens, the subject is clear and there are no spelling mistakes.
  3. Now type the employer's email address in To, copied from their official website or job advertisement. Hover over or check the address carefully.
  4. Click Send. With Undo Send set to 30 seconds, you still have a moment to catch a mistake.

Send a test to your own email address first if this is your first time. Open it as the employer would and check everything.

Step 9: Stay safe while job hunting

Job seekers are a favourite target for fraudsters. Remember Cyber Safety:

Pseudocode
IF an "employer" asks for a registration fee, training fee or security deposit
it is almost certainly a scam: do not pay
IF they ask for your Aadhaar, PAN or bank details before any interview or offer letter
refuse until you have verified the company
IF the offer arrives on WhatsApp with a link to install an app
    do not install it
VERIFY the company: official website, a landline, a real office address

Genuine employers do not charge you to apply.

Final checklist

  • The resume is one page, A4, true and checked for spelling.
  • It contains no Aadhaar, PAN or bank details.
  • Both .docx and .pdf versions are in the Resume folder with clear names.
  • A copy is in Google Drive or OneDrive, shared as Restricted.
  • The email has a clear subject, a polite message, the PDF attached, and the correct address.

Common mistakes

  • An unprofessional email address. Create a name-based address for job hunting.
  • Sending the .docx instead of the PDF. Formatting can break on other computers.
  • A file called resume.pdf or New Document.pdf. Put your name in the file name.
  • Forgetting the attachment. Attach first, add the address last.
  • Paying a "job agency" that contacted you. Real employers do not charge applicants.

Key points

  • Plan the content first: contact details, objective, education, skills, experience, languages.
  • Build a clean one-page A4 document with styles and bullets, then check it carefully.
  • Save an editable .docx and a .pdf with your name in the file name.
  • Keep a cloud copy with restricted sharing so you can send it from anywhere.
  • Email it with a clear subject and polite message, and never pay to apply for a job.

Exercise

Complete the project with your own details: create the Resume folder, write a one-page resume, save it as .docx and .pdf, upload the PDF to Google Drive or OneDrive, and email it to yourself with a proper subject and message. Then open the email on your phone and check that the PDF looks right there too.

Show solution

Check your work against the final checklist. From Terminal, confirm both files exist and the PDF size is reasonable:

PowerShell
Get-ChildItem "$([Environment]::GetFolderPath('MyDocuments'))\Resume" | Select-Object Name, Length

You should see two files with your name, for example Your-Name-Resume.docx and Your-Name-Resume.pdf, with the PDF usually well under 1 MB. In Gmail's Sent folder, the email should show the subject Application for ... - Your Name and a paperclip icon. If the PDF looks different on your phone, open the .docx, fix the layout, and save the PDF again.

Quick Quiz

1. Which details should you usually leave OUT of a resume?

2. Why send your resume as a PDF?

3. Which file name is best for a resume?

4. An "employer" asks for a ₹2,000 registration fee before the interview. What should you do?
